Peel Forest is a small community close to Geraldine in New Zealand’s South Island, where I live. It’s a forested area with native Totara, Kahikatea and Matai trees and the town has a lovely homely community feel.
This pretty scarf has a simple leafy lace edge that is reminiscent of the mountains and the trees in the area, and garter stitch for easy knitting in front of the telly or the fire on a cool night.
Peel Forest was my first pattern. It has been designed to make the very most of your 100g skein. Included in the pattern are instructions for weighing your skein between sections and row repeats to ensure that you have the smallest of nuggets left after you’ve bound off.
This pattern has options for knitting in 8ply/DK or 4ply/fingering yarn.
Supplies:
- A single 100g skein of either 4ply or 8ply yarn. Please take note of the box “A Note on the Length” below in regards to how you can make the most of your entire skein.
- One stitch marker
- Darning needle
- 4.5mm (US 7) knitting needles for 4ply or
- 6.5mm (US 10.5) knitting needles for 8ply either straight needles or a short circular needle will work nicely. You will have 69 sts at the widest point for the 4ply or 39 sts for the 8ply.
Gauge:
Gauge is not overly important, but the unblocked 4ply sample is 19 sts x 42 rows = 10x10cm/4x4in in garter stitch. The 8ply is 15 sts x 24 rows.
Finished size:
160x30cm, in a crescent shape for the 4ply, again this will depend on your considerations to “A Note on the Length”. The 8ply is 160x20cm blocked.
