In North Otago, on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, close to a wee town called Moeraki, there is a beach. On that beach lie a collection of very cool, unusually large, spherical boulders. They have the most magical, ethereal, eerie feel to them.
The beautiful locally produced and hand dyed Happy-go-knitty yarn used in these fun socks is a blend of Alpaca, Corriedale and Nylon, which makes for a rustic and robust sock, that is also soft and oh so cozy.
Moeraki Boulders socks are worked from the toe up, with a gusset, heel turn and heel flap. There are two adult sizes to choose from. The instructions are very easy to follow and include a few links to tutorials that might be useful.
Supplies:
- Happy-go-knitty Moeraki sock yarn in three colours; 50g Colour A (CA), 50g Colour B (CB), 20g Colour C (CC)
- 2.25mm (US 1 ) knitting needles, or needles that allow you to achieve gauge. Some of my test knitters have had to go up to 2.75mm needles with this yarn. These instructions are written for magic looping, but you can use your preferred method of sock knitting.
- (optional) one or two sizes larger needles for the boulders panel (see note at that point in the pattern)
- four stitch markers
- darning needle
Gauge:
17 sts x 21 rows = 5cm in stocking stitch.
Finished size:
This pattern is written for two sizes - medium and large. They will fit feet with an approximate circumference of 23cm and 26cm, respectively.
