It was a particularly frosty South Canterbury morning and as I sent my kids out to wait for the bus I realised, to my horror, that they had no gloves or hats on. What a neglectful knitting mum! So off I went to design a pair of mitts. I’ve named them after my eldest’s middle name, who was in turn named after his Dad’s Poppa. A good strong Scottish name, which also happens to be an excellent place to wear these cozy ribbed mitts.

These mitts are worked in a 2x2 rib, so they fit like, well, a glove. This pattern is written for three sizes. The small will fit a primary school aged child, the medium a small woman or older child, and of course the large will fit a wider hand. They are so simple to make, with an easily remembered pattern repeat and the instructions are clear and detailed, without being too cluttered with extra words. Happy knitting!

Finished sizes:

Measure the width of your dominant hand (ie if you are right-handed, measure your right hand), under the knuckle, and above the thumb, with palm flat and fingers straight. As the mitt is ribbed, the sizing is very forgiving, so this is not a precise measurement.

Small, to fit 14-17cm circumference

Medium, to fit 17-20cm circumference

Large, to fit 21cm + circumference.
